CS - Counsels on Stewardship (1940) Chapter 14— A Meager Pittance
I speak of the tithing system; yet how meager it looks to my mind! How small the estimate! How vain the endeavor to measure with mathematical rules, time, money, and love against a love and sacrifice that is measureless and incomputable! Tithes for Christ! Oh, meager pittance, shameful recompense for that which cost so much!—Testimonies for the Church 4:119. {CS 76.1}
God’s gift to humanity is immeasurable in time, space, or money. No earthly value can compare. We can never attain to match it. The least we can do is return the portion He requires from our first fruits. Not because he needs money. Everything we have is His. God gave us the system of benevolence for our benefit. We are to proclaim the everlasting gospel throughout the world to the souls that are perishing. He has appointed us as His co laborers, which is our privilege and honor. The work is plenty but the laborers are few. Let us all do our part in what God has called us to do. Let us make sure that God’s treasury is full.
Our kind and gracious Father,
We thank You for Your immeasurable love and sacrifice. We pray for Your blessing on the meager pittance we return to Your treasury. We pray You multiply it exponentially for the furtherance of the work You have appointed us to do. May all Your children increase their giving and participate in the much-needed labor throughout the world. Please put it in our hearts, minds, and souls to make our best effort. We thank You for the privilege and honor of calling us as Your co laborers. May all the brethren make their calling and election sure. We thank and praise You, in the name of Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
