Deuteronomy 1: 1
1:1 These [be] the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red [sea], between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
Study Deuteronomy Carefully—The book of Deuteronomy should be carefully studied by those living on the earth today. It contains a record of the instruction given to Moses to give to the children of Israel. In it the law is repeated.... {1BC 1117.5}
The law of God was often to be repeated to Israel. That its precepts might not be forgotten, it was to be kept before the people, and was ever to be exalted and honored. Parents were to read the law to their children, teaching it to them line upon line, precept upon precept. And on public occasions the law was to be read in the hearing of all the people. {1BC 1117.6}
Upon obedience to this law depended the prosperity of Israel. If they were obedient, it would bring them life; if disobedient, death (The Review and Herald, December 31, 1903). {1BC 1117.7}
Too often today, you will hear someone say “we are not under the law or the old covenant but under the new” and “the law was nailed to the cross.” This is error, plain and simple. The first covenant, or the Old Testament, did not fail; the people failed. They tried to keep the law by their own power. This necessitated a new covenant, the New Testament, where by the blood of Christ there is the remission of sins. This does not mean that the law was done away with. Does anyone really think that it is all right to steal, commit adultery, murder, etc.? Sin is the same today as it was back in the day of Moses, the transgression of the law, and the results are the same, death. All of God’s Ten Commandments were given for instruction to all people for all generations. It is our choice to obey that we may receive life, or disobey and receive death. I pray that you will choose life.
Our Father, God almighty,
We thank You for giving us Your Word, Your Book of Life. You have provided all the instruction we will ever need for life on our earthly pilgrimage, so that we may reach the heights of Your glorious kingdom and have eternal life with You in New Jerusalem. We pray that You help us, dear Lord, to overcome sin, as You also overcame, that we would sin no more. We are sorry and repent of our sin, and pray that by Your mercy You forgive us. Help us to repeat Your law to all to be carried forward from generation to generation that none of Your precepts be forgotten. Save us, in the name of Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
