CS - Counsels on Stewardship (1940) Chapter 11—Selling Homes and Property
No Cord to Bind to Earth
The work of God is to become more extensive, and if His people follow His counsel, there will not be much means in their possession to be consumed in the final conflagration. All will have laid up their treasure where moth and rust cannot corrupt; and the heart will not have a cord to bind it to earth.—Testimonies for the Church 1:197. {CS 60.3}
No one knows the hour of our Lord’s coming. The trumpet may sound tomorrow, and many will be found with no oil in their lamps. They will be holding on to their beloved possessions, still wanting of the things in this world. The Lord is my shepherd, and I shall not want. This is His counsel that we are to follow. Do not allow your possessions to bind you to this world, lest they and you are consumed together. Lay up your treasures in heaven, for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Let the work of God be your focus, and keep your eyes on Jesus.
Our kind and gracious Father,
We thank You for all the blessings You continually pour out unto us. We pray that we will be ready for Your great day to come. Let none of us be found sleeping with no oil in our lamps. Help us to put away the things of this world, which corrupt and will be consumed in the final fire. Let nothing bind us to this world, as we long to be with You in heaven, in that heavenly mansion which You have prepared for us. Help us to continue in the work that You have given us to do, that none should perish for a lack of funds that brings the everlasting gospel to them. We pray that we remain faithful stewards of all You have given us, and it is in Your name Christ Jesus, we pray. Amen.
